Hand Exercises
Gentle strengthening, mobility and cooldown exercises for the hands and fingers, using a stress ball and an elastic band.
General guidelines
- Warm up your hands before starting — for example, soak them in warm water for 5–10 minutes, or use a bean bag.
- Perform each exercise 5–10 times, 1–2 times a day, unless pain or fatigue increases.
- Use slow, controlled movements; never force the range of motion.
Stress ball exercises
Tool Soft stress ball (sponge or therapy ball)
1. Basic squeeze
- Squeeze the ball with all of your fingers and thumb.
- Hold for 3 seconds, then release slowly.
Benefit Strengthens grip and activates the small muscles of the hand
2. Pinch grip
- Pinch the ball between your thumb and each fingertip, one at a time.
- Hold for 3 seconds on each pinch.
Benefit Improves thumb and fingertip strength
3. Rolling massage
- Roll the ball under your palm, or between both palms.
Benefit Helps circulation and reduces joint stiffness
Elastic band exercises
Tool Medium-resistance elastic band or therapy band loop
1. Finger abduction
- Place the band around all of your fingers and thumb.
- Slowly spread your fingers apart, then relax.
Benefit Improves joint mobility and finger extension
2. Finger extensions (individual)
- Wrap the band around the tips of two adjacent fingers.
- Move the fingers apart and back together.
Benefit Targets finger stability and coordination
3. Thumb strengthener
- Loop the band around your thumb and index finger.
- Move your thumb outward, like a “thumbs up”.
Benefit Enhances thumb range and grip
Mobility exercises
1. Warm water range of motion
- In a bowl of warm water, perform:
- Finger flexion and extension
- Thumb circles
- Finger “walking” along the bottom of the bowl
2. Tabletop finger lifts
- Place your hand palm-down on a table.
- Lift one finger at a time and hold briefly.
Benefit Improves control and mobility
Cooldown
1. Gentle massage
- Use lotion to massage your fingers and joints.
Benefit Reduces inflammation and promotes relaxation
2. Stretching
- Gently stretch each finger backward and forward.
- Avoid overstretching.
Notes for the patient
- It’s normal to feel mild discomfort, but stop if there is sharp pain or swelling.
- Track your symptoms: stiffness, pain levels and function.
- If a joint is hot or swollen, skip strengthening and focus only on gentle range of motion.
